2022 Incident Summaries

December 2022

  • On December 31, a traffic hazard occurred on Highway 84 approximately 0.25 miles west of Pescadero Creek Road. A tree had fallen across all lanes of traffic and was contributing to the La Honda Creek overflow of water. Rangers provided traffic control for San Mateo County Fire while they removed the hazard.

  • On December 31, a ranger observed a landslide on Purisima Creek Road blocking both directions of travel. The ranger notified San Mateo County Fire as well as San Mateo County Roads. Rangers with assistance from residents were able to clear enough to create a drivable path.

  • On December 25, a ranger observed damage to moss on rocks near the Alpine Pond archaeological site. Words and initials had been carved into the moss. There are no suspects at this time. Rangers will attempt to rehab the area at a future date.

  • On December 24, a ranger found a pellet gun, backpack, helmet, vest, belt and gun harness in Long Ridge Open Space Preserve. The items were logged as found property and are being held at the Skyline Field Office.

  • On December 24, a ranger responded to a report of a hiker who appeared to be in an altered state in El Sereno Open Space Preserve on the Aquinas Trail. The ranger arrived on scene to find the patient being assessed by Santa Clara County Fire Medics. The patient was transported by ambulance to good Samaritan Hospital for a possible hypoglycemic episode.

  • On December 24, a ranger discovered additional illegal cover boards while in the area of a previously known illegal cover board site in Long Ridge Open Space Preserve.

  • On December 18, a ranger observed 4 cover boards illegally placed in Long Ridge Open Space Preserve 250 meters north of gate LR10.

  • On December 17, a “vehicles prohibited” violation occurred after closing hours on Mt. Umunhum Road. A motorcyclist driving on a suspended license became stuck inside gate SA13 and spent the night off trail after dropping the motorcycle down the hillside in an attempt to get around the gate. Santa Clara County Sheriff's deputies were dispatched to assist but were unable to locate the suspect that night. Rangers located the suspect the next morning. The suspect declined medical care and later removed the motorcycle from the preserve. The motorcycle was later determined to be a stolen vehicle.

  • On December 17, a ranger was flagged down from a bystander at the Stevens Creek County Park Grizzly Flat parking area for a couple who had been fighting and possibly operating a vehicle while being under the influence of alcohol. The ranger requested assistance from California Highway Patrol (CHP) and Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office. Two rangers kept the couple apart and safe until CHP arrived. The two suspects were arrested and transported by Santa Clara County Sheriff’s deputies.

  • On December 16, a ranger was made aware of an illegal cover board placed at Lori's Pond in Monte Bello Open Space Preserve. After further investigation, a total of 6 cover boards were discovered around the perimeter of Lori's Pond. No suspect has been discovered.

  • On December 15 at approximately 3:10 p.m., a ranger observed illegal cover boards that were placed in Long Ridge Open Space Preserve in the area of the Jikoji Zen Center entrance road. Cover boards, pieces of wood laid on the ground, are used to attract and collect protected amphibians and reptiles. The boards were documented and removed.

  • On December 13, rangers received a report from a neighbor about a Driving Under the Influence (DUI) arrest that occurred on Alpine Road on November 23. This arrest may be associated with the property damage that occurred at Windy Hill gate WH06 which was discovered on November 24. Rangers obtained a copy of the police report from the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office.

  • On Monday December 5, at approximately 8:30 p.m., off duty staff discovered a fire inside the Skyline Christmas Tree farm in Monte Bello Open Space Preserve. A small fire was burning on the ground next to the tree farm booth and slightly burning the booth. The fire was extinguished by staff and Cal Fire and the fee shack incurred minor damage. The fire may have been caused by hot coals from the wood stove inside the booth that were emptied earlier in the day.

November 2022

  • On November 27, a bicyclist crashed in Sierra Azul Open Space Preserve on the Priest Rock Trail. The patient's chief complaint was shoulder pain. Santa Clara County Park Rangers assisted the patient on the trail and transported him to Alma Bridge Road. The patient was released by Santa Clara County EMS to his father, who took him to the hospital.

  • On November 26, a vehicle accident occurred in Los Trancos Open Space Preserve. A juvenile driver was uninjured when their vehicle left Page Mill Road and entered Los Trancos Open Space Preserve. There was no damage to the preserve and the vehicle was removed by tow truck.

  • On November 25, a ranger was alerted by a passerby of a vehicle accident on Skyline Boulevard about 0.5 miles north of Rapley Ranch Road. The ranger arrived on scene where a motorcyclist hit a car head on. The motorcyclist was unconscious, and two off-duty nurses were attending to him. The ranger assisted the nurses and provided medical equipment from his medical bag. Two other rangers assessed the passengers of the vehicle who had injuries as well. San Mateo County Fire arrived and took over patient care. The motorcyclist was transported to the hospital by air, and the two occupants of the other vehicle were transported to the hospital by ground ambulance.

  • On November 21, a stolen vehicle was located on Hicks Road across from the Guadalupe Reservoir. The vehicle was unoccupied, and no suspects were observed. The vehicle was recovered by Santa Clara County Sheriff Deputies.

  • On November 19, a ranger found a Ford F-150, parked on Loma Prieta Road that was stolen out of San Jose. No suspects were seen. The vehicle was recovered by Santa Clara County Sheriff Deputies.

  • On November 18, a ranger responded to a solo vehicle accident in Foothills Open Space Preserve. The occupants were uninjured, and the vehicle was removed from District lands by a tow truck.

  • On November 16, an injury vehicle accident occurred on Highway 1 approximately 2 miles north of Pescadero Creek Road in San Mateo County. A ranger provided traffic control until relieved by San Mateo County Sherriff Deputies.

  • On November 13, an injury bicycle accident occurred on the El Corte de Madera Creek Trail. The patient was extracted from off trail after sustaining an ankle injury and was transported by ground ambulance.

  • On November 13, rangers responded to a cardiac emergency that occurred in the Rancho San Antonio Open Space Preserve on the Stephen E. Abbors Trail. When the ranger arrived with the patient, CPR was in progress. The ranger deployed an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), and one shock was given. CPR continued until Santa Clara County Fire arrived and took over care. The patient was transported by ground to a local hospital with a pulse.

  • On November 6, a ranger was first on scene to a motorcycle accident on Highway 35 near the Skyline Ridge Chestnut Orchard entrance. A vehicle stopped to turn into the chestnut orchard when a motorcycle approached from behind and fell to avoid colliding with the car. Rangers provided initial patient care and traffic control. The patient was then transported to the hospital by ambulance.

  • On November 5, a ranger responded to a minor injury bicycle accident that occurred in Fremont Older Open Space Preserve on the Coyote Ridge Trail. The patient self-evacuated to the Prospect Parking Area and was met by Santa Clara County Fire and medic personnel. The patient was evaluated, signed an Against Medical Advice (AMA) from, and left the preserve by personal vehicle.

  • On November 5, rangers responded to an injury bicycle accident that occurred in Monte Bello Open Space Preserve on Skid Road Trail. One patient was treated by rangers and Santa Clara County Fire medics and then was transported by ground ambulance.

  • On November 2, a ranger was dispatched to the Skyline Chestnut Farm in Skyline Ridge Open Space Preserve for a 61-year-old female who had fallen and sustained a possible broken ankle. The ranger called for CAL FIRE and the patient was carried off the trail to the ambulance. The patient was then transported by ground to Stanford Hospital.

October 2022

  • On October 28, an offsite medical emergency occurred near Russian Ridge Open Space Preserve. A person overdosed on narcotics on Alpine Road and rangers assisted the responding medical units and San Mateo County Sheriff's Office with the event. A San Mateo County Deputy administered naloxone (Narcan) to the unresponsive patient. The patient was transported to the hospital by air ambulance and an associated party was arrested for multiple unassociated warrants.

  • On October 26, a ranger responded to an accident that occurred on the service road by the former tennis court area in Rancho San Antonio County Park. The ranger found the patient sitting down on the ground surrounded by a group of riders he was with. Santa Clara County Fire Department responded. The patient's chief complaint was shoulder pain. The patient refused further treatment with Fire personnel and the ranger drove the patient to the parking lot where a friend picked him up.

  • On October 25, a ranger responded to an auto burglary that occurred in the parking lot of Picchetti Ranch Open Space Preserve. No active burglary was witnessed. A few items and credit cards were taken, and a Santa Clara County Sheriff’s event number was created when the victim reported the incident.

  • On October 22, a tree was found blocking all lanes of Highway 35 approximately 1 mile north of the intersection with Kings Mountain Road in San Mateo County. Staff assisted San Mateo County Fire Department with clearing the road along with traffic control. The tree was cleared and both lanes of traffic were reopened.

  • On October 21, the Skyline Area Superintendent and Area Manager met with a neighbor to investigate illegal tree cutting in Windy Hill Open Space Preserve along Portola Road. Several trees had been cut at multiple heights. The only discernable purpose is to clear the view for a house on Stonegate Road, across the street. This was a repeat of cutting that had occurred earlier this year and in years past. The Area Superintendent went to the resident and spoke with a homeowner who denied any involvement.

  • On October 21, a motorcycle accident occurred on Highway 35 near Skyline Ridge Open Space Preserve. Rangers responded and assisted CAL FIRE, who was already on scene, with traffic control.

  • On October 21, three juveniles committed multiple violations in Coal Creek Open Space Preserve. They were using tools to maintain an illegal bike trail in an area closed to the public. Parents were contacted by phone, all three were issued written warnings, and then released.

  • On October 20, a ranger observed dismembered remains of at least three deer on the north side of Sorich Road 0.7 miles west of Portola Heights Road. Information and photos were gathered and forwarded to a California Department of Fish and Wildlife warden.

  • On October 16 and October 23, a ranger provided a “Spooktacular Redwoods” interpretive pop-up table talk for two hours at Purisima Creek Redwoods Open Space Preserve. The ranger reported engaging 35 visitors at the first event. It was be the first ranger activity advertised on the Midpen website.

  • On October 13, a .177 caliber BB handgun was found in the Russian Ridge Open Space Preserve parking lot storm drain.

  • On October 9, rangers responded to a solo bicycle accident that occurred on the Kennedy Trail in Sierra Azul Open Space Preserve. A ranger was first on scene and provided initial medical care until Santa Clara County Fire Department responded. A ground ambulance transported the cyclist to the hospital for a shoulder injury.

  • On October 9, a ranger responded to an auto burglary that occurred at Rancho San Antonio County Park in Lot 6. The incident was reported to Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office on October 10 and reported to rangers on October 15. Information was gathered from the victim for a report.

  • On October 9, rangers were made aware of an auto burglary that occurred in the Russian Ridge Open Space Preserve main parking lot. When rangers arrived the reporting party had left so rangers followed up with a phone call to get information for the report. The reporting party was asked to file an online report with the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office as well.

  • On October 6, a firearm was found in the Sierra Azul Open Space Preserve by a ranger off Loma Prieta Road. The firearm was a short barreled (less then 16”) AR15 pattern carbine. The ranger could not find a serial number or manufacturer name on the receiver. The ranger removed a 20- round loaded magazine and a round from the chamber. No suspects were seen and the firearm was turned over to the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office.

September 2022

  • On September 21, a ranger discovered a vehicle accident on Skyline Boulevard in front of Purisima Creek Redwoods Open Space Preserve North Ridge Parking Lot. The ranger called for San Mateo County Fire Department and conducted a primary exam of the occupant who stated they were going 25 miles per hour and their brakes failed causing them to collide with a power pole. The ranger continued to assist with the patient once Fire personnel and medics arrived. The patient declined additional medical attention and was released on scene. The vehicle sustained major front-end damage and was towed by California Highway Patrol.

  • On September 15, San Mateo County Fire Department responded to a visitor who fell on the Craig Britton Trail in Purisima Creek Redwoods Open Space Preserve. Rangers responded and assisted Fire personnel with locating, assessing, and extracting the visitor. Fire personnel then evaluated and released the visitor on scene.

  • On September 13, a ranger responded to a report of a downed bicyclist on Hicks Road below Mount Umunhum Road. The bicyclist was discovered and called in by Midpen maintenance staff. When the ranger arrived, they performed an initial medical assessment and provided care until San Jose Fire Department arrived and took over patient care. The patient was transported by ambulance to the hospital.

  • On September 13, rangers responded to a visitor who suffered a possible heart attack/failure in Rancho San Antonio Open Space Preserve. CPR was performed by visitors who found the patient, ranger staff, and Santa Clara County Fire Department personnel when they arrived on scene. The patient was given multiple shocks from an automatic external defibrillator (AED). The patient had a shockable rhythm when loaded in the ambulance for transport.

  • On September 11, rangers responded to an 84-year-old female who experienced heat illness on the Hassler Loop Trail in Pulgas Ridge Open Space Preserve. San Mateo County Emergency Medical Services were first on scene and transported the patient to the parking lot where she signed an Against Medical Advice Form and was released.

  • On September 11, rangers responded to a cardiac emergency that occurred on the Stephen E. Abbors Trail in the Rancho San Antonio Open Space Preserve. The first ranger on scene provided initial medical care until Santa Clara County Fire Department arrived and took over care. The patient was transported by ground to the hospital.

  • On September 11, a ranger was alerted of a vehicle fire on Highway 9, half a mile east of Highway 35. The ranger found an unoccupied vehicle on fire and began an initial attack, focusing on the burning vegetation around the vehicle to prevent spread into the wildland. CAL FIRE and Santa Clara County Fire Department responded to the incident and extinguished the fire.

  • On September 11, a ranger discovered a disabled vehicle after dark facing the wrong way and blocking a lane of traffic in a blind turn on Highway 84, approximately half a mile east of the Red Barn. The ranger ensured there was not an accident and called for San Mateo County Fire Department and California Highway Patrol. The ranger placed electric flashers to warn oncoming traffic of the road hazard. A La Honda Fire Brigade volunteer stopped to assist and with the ranger they were able to push the car out of the roadway.

  • On September 10, rangers responded to a bicycle accident on the Toyon Trail in Fremont Older Open Space Preserve. One patient complained of shoulder pain and was transported by ground to the hospital.

    On September 10, an auto burglary occurred in Purisima Creek Redwoods Open Space Preserve North Ridge Parking Lot. A ranger called the reporting party, gathered information, and wrote a report. While the reporting party was hiking, they began to receive fraud alerts from their credit card company. When they returned to their car, they found credit cards missing. The reporting party also filed a report with the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office.

  • On September 9, a ranger responded to a report of stolen Midpen tools at the Beatty House property in Sierra Azul Open Space Preserve. A job storage box was broken into and several items were stolen. A report was generated.

  • On September 5, rangers responded to an overdue hiker in Pulgas Ridge Open Space Preserve. The hiker was a 78-year-old diabetic male and the temperature was 105 degrees. Rangers coordinated with San Mateo Sheriff’s Office personnel, and a hasty search was conducted. The missing party was located on the Dusky Footed Woodrat Trail, evaluated, escorted to a vehicle at the Hassler Trail, and transported to the trailhead. The missing party declined further medical evaluation and left the preserve by personal vehicle.

  • On September 5, a hiker experienced heat related illness while scouting a docent hike at Tunitas Creek Open Space Preserve. San Mateo County Fire Department responded, located the hiker, and transported her to the ambulance where she was evaluated and released.

  • On September 5, rangers responded to a 911 call of hikers in distress on the Spring Ridge Trail in Windy Hill Open Space Preserve. The hikers were assessed by San Mateo County Fire Department and refused care as they were feeling better after resting. They were provided a courtesy transport by rangers to their vehicle. The temperature at the time was approximately 105 degrees.

  • On September 5, a ranger was flagged down by a hiking group for a heat emergency on the Harkins Ridge Trail in Purisima Creek Redwoods Open Space Preserve. The ranger performed a patient evaluation, provided patient care, and requested a response from San Mateo County Fire Department. The patient was a juvenile and with parental consent signed a release form with Fire personnel.

  • On September 3, the carpool lot in Rancho San Antonio Open Space Preserve began operation through the Labor Day weekend. With the extreme heat of the weekend visitation numbers were low in the Preserve.

  • On September 3, a loose dog was reported in Purisima Creek Redwoods Open Space Preserve. A ranger responded and treated the dog for heat exhaustion and dehydration. The ranger transported the animal out of the Preserve where its owner contacted the ranger and took possession of the animal.

August 2022

  • On August 29, a ranger responded to an injury accident on the Overlook Trail in El Sereno Open Space Preserve. A cyclist struck a pedestrian causing the pedestrian to fall and injure her leg with serious bleeding. An ambulance unit located the patient, treated the wound, and transported her to the hospital. All involved persons were gone when the ranger arrived, and all information was gathered over the phone.

  • On August 28, a ranger discovered a lock was cut on Purisima Creek Redwoods Open Space Preserve gate PC05, the lower access off Purisima Creek Road. The ranger wrote an informational report and replaced the lock. This is the second time this lock has been cut in recent months.

  • On August 27, a hiking accident occurred during a docent-led night hike in Monte Bello Open Space Preserve. A minor wound was treated on scene, and the patient refused any further care. A ranger followed up to take a report.

  • On August 25, a visitor experienced shortness of breath at Purisima Creek Redwoods Open Space Preserve. A ranger provided a medical assessment and transported the visitor to waiting San Mateo County Fire Department personnel. The visitor was assessed and released by Fire personnel as their symptoms had improved.

  • On August 25, a ranger discovered an unhoused encampment off the Bay Trail in Ravenswood Open Space Preserve. Rangers posted a 72-hour notice to vacate on the tent and continued to monitor. Rangers did not see any further signs of habitation, removed the encampment on August 31, and the area was cleaned up.

  • On August 23, a man was found injured in a car that drove over the embankment in the Portola Heights community. The man was in the car for approximately 13 hours and unable to leave due to injuries. He was transported to the Skyline Ridge Open Space Preserve landing zone and air lifted to the hospital. Two rangers assisted with traffic control and loading the patient into the air ambulance.

  • On August 21, a ranger was flagged down on Highway 35 near Skyline Ridge Open Space Preserve. The person requested a standby at a residence to retrieve belongings following a prior incident. The reported incident was forwarded to the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office, and the person left the area. Follow up with the Sheriff’s Office provided an arrest occurred at the private residence.

  • On August 17, a ranger responded to a Midpen employee who was driving a Midpen truck and felt ill after smelling fumes from inside the truck. Santa Clara County Fire Department was requested and responded. The staff member was taken to the hospital via ambulance. The vehicle was brought to a mechanic and vehicle’s issue is under investigation.

  • Rangers coordinated patrols with California Department of Fish and Wildlife (DFW) and took a DFW warden on a ride-along to prepare for potential poaching incidents on Midpen lands in response to the start of the deer hunting season in this area (August 13); per the ordinance, hunting is not allowed on Midpen lands. Rangers responded to a report of a person with a rifle entering Purisima Uplands, however, no violations were observed by staff.

  • On August 14, a ranger responded to a report of a vehicle accident off Highway 35 into Long Ridge Open Space Preserve. It was determined that the crashed vehicle was from a prior unreported accident and is currently abandoned. The ranger followed up with California Highway Patrol and San Mateo County Fire Department to determine when the accident happened and the owner of the vehicle to coordinate for the vehicles removal.

  • On the evenings of August 11, 12, and 13, rangers worked extra late shifts until 12:00am to patrol after-hours use for Perseid meteor shower viewing. Astronomical viewing permits are issued to allow for meteoroid shower viewing at Monte Bello and Skyline Ridge Open Space Preserves parking lots. Thursday evening was very calm, with Friday and Saturday evenings experiencing more permitted after-hours visitation. On Saturday morning, a ranger contacted a visitor inside the Monte Bello Open Space Preserve parking lot who spent the night in their vehicle after entering without a permit during the meteor viewing period.

  • On August 10, a ranger responded to a visitor who fell while running on the Lower Meadow Trail in Rancho San Antonio Open Space Preserve. The fall caused multiple superficial abrasions to their hands, elbows, and knees. Midpen staff and a ranger provided minor medical care. The patient refused further medical assistance and self-transported home.

  • On August 7, a ranger responded to a man who felt dizzy and was incoherent near the main parking lot at Rancho San Antonio County Park. Santa Clara County Fire Department personnel responded and transported the patient by ground to the hospital.

  • On August 7, rangers responded to a report of a vehicle off the roadway adjacent to Lot 4 in Ranch San Antonio County Park. When rangers arrived, they observed a vehicle approximately ten feet off the roadway that hit a small tree. The rangers assessed the driver and called for a medical response and then performed traffic control while the vehicle was towed. The patient denied medical transport and was released at the scene by Santa Clara County Fire Department personnel against medical advice.

  • On August 7, San Mateo County Fire Department used the landing zone at the Red Barn in La Honda Creek Open Space Preserve. Fire Personnel transported a patient to the Landing Zone. A ranger assisted fire personnel with access to the site, wetting the Landing Zone to reduce dust, and loading the patient onto the helicopter. The patient was transported by air ambulance to a hospital.

  • On August 2, a ranger responded to a juvenile subject who suffered an unknown allergic reaction in Rancho San Antonio Open Space Preserve. The patient was in the restroom at the County Park and was treated for an allergic reaction by the Santa Clara County Fire Department then transported to a local hospital.

July 2022

  • On July 31, a ranger responded to a man who fell while riding his bicycle in Fremont Older Open Space Preserve. The fall caused an altered level of consciousness, shoulder pain, and superficial abrasions. The ranger and Santa Clara County Fire Department/EMS provided medical care. The patient was transported by ground ambulance to the hospital.

  • On July 30, rangers and a supervising ranger conducted a trail etiquette and speed enforcement outreach table engaging over 50 visitors at Long Ridge Open Space Preserve.

  • On the morning of July 28, a contractor vehicle attempting to access the Black Mountain communication site entered the Canyon Trail in Monte Bello Open Space Preserve from Page Mill Road. The driver attempted to drive up the single-track Bella Vista Trail and rolled off the side of the trail landing on its roof in a gully. The driver sustained minor injuries and was transported to the hospital. Palo Alto Police officers called for a tow, but the tow company was unable to remove the vehicle. The company that owns the vehicle is working on removal anticipated for early September when a helicopter is available.

  • On July 28, a ranger responded to a visitor who was experiencing symptoms of heat illness in Rancho San Antonio Open Space Preserve. The visitor complained of being tired and hot. The visitor declined additional care and was given a courtesy transport back to their vehicle.

  • On July 26, rangers responded to a report of dumping in Bear Creek Redwoods Open Space Preserve near Highway 17. Approximately ten bags of trash were found on a permit-only trail 300-feet north of gate BC12. Workers at the site were interviewed, trash was removed, and a report was written.

  • On July 26, an injury bicycle accident occurred on Alpine Road about 1/2 mile west of Skyline Boulevard. Rangers and San Mateo County Fire Department responded. A ranger located the cyclist, assessed them, and treated them for a shoulder injury and abrasions until Fire personnel arrived. The patient was transported by ground transport to the hospital.

  • On July 22, a visitor experienced a heat related emergency while hiking on the North Ridge Trail. A ranger located the person and directed San Mateo County Fire Department to the scene. The person was transported to the North Ridge lot, signed an against medical advice form, and was released by Fire personnel.

  • On July 22, a ranger was approached by an injured mountain biker requesting a medical assessment for right shoulder pain on the Peters Creek Trail in Long Ridge Open Space Preserve. The ranger requested San Mateo County Fire Department who assessed the patient and transported him to the hospital.

  • On July 19, rangers responded to a visitor who suffered an injury to her face from a fall on the Stephen E. Abbors Trail in Rancho San Antonio Open Space Preserve. The patient signed an against medical advice waiver with the Santa Clara County paramedic.

  • On July 16, a ranger was first on scene to a vehicle accident on Highway 17 near Bear Creek Road. The ranger assessed the scene and used his patrol vehicle to block traffic. Santa Clara County Fire Department arrived shortly and began patient care. California Highway Patrol arrived and took over traffic control.

  • On July 15, a motorcycle accident occurred on Highway 84 approximately 0.5 miles west of Highway 35. A ranger provided mutual aid at a landing zone, and the patient was transported to the hospital via air ambulance.

  • On July 15, a herd of cattle escaped their enclosure on private property in the area of the La Honda Event Center and were reported to Midpen by a nearby camp where the cattle gathered. Rangers assisted the property owner in contacting the rancher responsible for the cattle. The rancher retrieved the cattle the next morning.

  • On July 15, a ranger responded to an injury accident on Chamise Trail in Rancho San Antonio Open Space Preserve. The patient complained of elbow pain. The patient was treated by Santa Clara County Fire Department and was transported by ground ambulance to the hospital.

  • On July 12, rangers were made aware of an extinguished pole fire in Tunitas Creek Open Space Preserve. The fire was contained to the pole and was extinguished by San Mateo County Fire Department. Pacific Gas & Electric was on scene to turn off power to the pole, and a ranger responded to take photographs of the incident.

  • On July 11, rangers responded to a man who fell while riding his bicycle at the entrance of Rancho San Antonio County Park. The fall caused trauma and bleeding at the back of the patient’s head. Rangers and Santa Clara County Fire Department provided medical care. The patient was transported by ground ambulance to the hospital.

  • On July 10, rangers assisted with traffic control for a vehicle off the roadway on Highway 35 in the area of Upper Stevens Creek County Park. CAL FIRE treated the driver for injuries who was then transported to the hospital by ambulance.

  • On July 10, a visitor suffered from heat illness while hiking up the North Ridge Trail in Purisima Creek Redwoods Open Space Preserve. The patient was transported by rangers to the North Ridge Lot and then transported to the hospital by ground ambulance.

  • On July 10, an injury hiking accident occurred in Skyline Ridge Open Space Preserve. One patient was treated at the scene by a ranger and San Mateo County Fire Department for a suspected ankle fracture and was transported by ground ambulance to a local hospital.

  • On July 10, rangers held a speed awareness and trail etiquette event in the Fremont Older Open Space Preserve. Rangers explained trail etiquette on multiuse trails, why speed enforcement is necessary, how speed enforcement is done, and handed out bells for bike riders to place on their handlebars.

  • On July 9, a visitor reported they were feeling unwell while hiking in Windy Hill Open Space Preserve. Rangers and San Mateo County Fire Department responded to the call. Fire personnel evaluated the patient and released them after signing a release form.

  • On July 8, a hiker in Long Ridge Open Space Preserve reported discovering two large dogs roaming freely on Long Ridge Road. Rangers responded and transported the dogs to Skyline Field Office where they were picked up by Peninsula Animal Control. The owner of the dogs later called the Skyline Field Office and was advised of the dogs’ location.

  • On July 4, rangers responded to a woman having an allergic reaction to an insect bite. Santa Clara County Fire Department medics assessed the patient, and a ranger transported the patient to the parking lot. The patient signed an AMA and was released.

  • On July 3, rangers held a speed awareness and trail etiquette event in St. Joseph’s Hill Open Space Preserve. Rangers explained trail etiquette on multiuse trails, why speed enforcement is necessary, how speed enforcement is done, and handed out bells for bike riders to place on their handlebars.

  • On July 1, a ranger responded to a mountain biker who crashed at Maisie’s Peak in Fremont Older Open Space Preserve. The patient complained of neck and shoulder pain. The patient was treated by Santa Clara County Fire Department personnel and transported by ground ambulance to the hospital.

  • On July 1, a vandalism violation occurred in Russian Ridge Open Space Preserve. An e-bike prohibited sign and post were discovered missing from inside Russian Ridge Gate RR04. The area was briefly searched, the sign was not located, and a report was written. A replacement sign and post will be installed.

June 2022

  • On June 30, rangers responded to a woman who fell on a tree root near Deer Hollow Farm at Rancho San Antonio Open Space Preserve. The patient had a small contusion on her head but was alert and oriented. She refused medical treatment and was given a courtesy transport to her vehicle by a ranger.

  • On June 27, a ranger responded to an auto burglary at Rancho San Antonio County Park. The victim went for a run and returned to his vehicle finding a window was broken and his wallet and keys stolen. A Santa Clara County Sheriff ’s Deputy responded and took a report.

  • On June 26, a ranger responded to a medical aid call on Mora Drive in Rancho San Antonio Open Space Preserve. The patient was examined by Santa Clara County Fire Department and signed an against medical advice (AMA) form with the Fire Department.

  • On June 20, a ranger responded to an auto burglary at Rancho San Antonio County Park. The victim went on a hike and returned to her vehicle to find it was forcibly opened and a credit card and health insurance card stolen. The victim was advised to fill out an online report with the Santa Clara County Sheriff ’s Office.

  • On June 20, a ranger observed a vehicle on the side of Hicks Road at the Guadalupe Reservoir. CAL FIRE responded, Santa Clara County Sheriff ’s Deputy, Santa Clara County Park Rangers, and Santa Clara County Medics responded. The vehicle was unoccupied, determined to be stolen, and towed away.

  • On June 20, a visitor suffered from heat illness while hiking up the North Ridge Trail in Purisima Creek Redwoods Open Space Preserve. The temperature was around 85 degrees. A ranger responded and met with the patient, conducted an initial assessment, and monitored the patient until Kings Mountain Fire Brigade arrived. The patient was transported by fire personnel to the North Ridge Lot and refused further care.

  • On June 16, a California State Park Ranger contacted two individuals in Skyline Ridge Open Space Preserve who took a truck bed load of bay tree branches from the preserve. The State Ranger gave the individuals verbal warnings and notified Midpen Ranger staff of the contact.

  • On June 15, rangers responded to a medical aid call within Rancho San Antonio Open Space Preserve at Deer Hollow Farm. The chief complaint was chest pain and a laceration to the head from a fall. The patient was assessed by Santa Clara County Fire Department and transported by ground to the hospital.

  • On June 13 at midnight, rangers were called to Monte Bello Open Space Preserve where a subject reported they were lost in the area of Black Mountain. The subject reported they were experiencing mental issues and having a hard time. Midpen Rangers, Palo Alto Police Officers, and a California Highway Patrol helicopter conducted a search of the area and were unable to locate or make contact with the subject within the preserve. The subject was later reported to have been contacted by Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office in Saratoga at which time all agencies determined to terminate the search.

  • On June 11, a ranger responded to a hiker suffering from heat illness on the Harkins Ridge Trail in Purisima Creek Redwoods Open Space Preserve. The ranger was first on scene with the hiker and provided cooling in the patrol vehicle until San Mateo County Fire Department arrived. Fire personnel treated and released the visitor on scene. The ranger transported the patient to the bottom parking lot where the patient was released.

  • On June 11, rangers responded to an injured bicyclist on Kennedy Trail in Sierra Azul Preserve. The patient suffered abrasions to the left leg, elbow, and left hip. Santa Clara County Fire Department assessed the patient’s medical condition and transported them to SA01 where the patient refused further care.

  • On June 7, two cryptocurrency mining devices were found in Windy Hill Open Space Preserve. The devices were hotographed and collected as evidence.

  • On June 5, a ranger responded to a hiker who reported suffering an injury resulting from contact with an equestrian on the Wildcat Loop Trail in Rancho San Antonio Open Space Preserve. The hiker reported that the horse stepped on their foot when they were attempting to pass each other. The hiker refused medical response.

  • On June 5, a ranger observed a campfire burning on the shoreline of Guadalupe Reservoir. The ranger contacted Santa Clara County Parks, but they were not able to respond. The ranger contacted the group of nine juveniles, two of whom were cited and released.

  • On June 4, rangers responded to a solo mountain bike accident at the intersection of Skid Road and Stevens Creek Nature Trail in Monte Bello Open Space Preserve. A ranger on motorcycle patrol was first on scene with the patient, conducted a primary survey, and took c-spine precautions. The rider sustained a head injury and was transported by air ambulance to the hospital.

May 2022

  • On May 31, rangers responded to a visitor who fell on the Farm Bypass Trail in Rancho San Antonio Open Space Preserve. The visitor broke her thumb and hit her head during the fall. Santa Clara County Fire Department responded and assessed the patient. The patient was transported by ground to the hospital.

  • On May 24, a medical emergency involving a hiker occurred on the Fir Trail in the El Corte de Madera Creek Open Space Preserve. The caller to Mountain View Dispatch requested a ride out of the preserve. The responding ranger called the reporting party and learned that the person was suffering an altered level of consciousness. The ranger requested San Mateo County Fire Department respond as well. The ranger arrived to the patient and found them conscious and alert but complaining of nausea and had an involuntary bowel movement. It was a hot day, but the patient described feeling chilled. The medics suspected a possible cardiac event as well as heat related illness. The patient was transported to the hospital.

  • On May 23, a ranger responded to a report of a vehicle accident on Hicks Road near Mount Umunhum Road. San Jose Fire Department and paramedics were on scene when the ranger arrived. The ranger conducted traffic control and gathered information. The victim was treated and transported to the hospital by ground ambulance.

  • On May 22, a ranger responded to a report of an injured mountain biker on Monte Bello Road in Monte Bello Open Space Preserve. A ranger arrived on scene and transported the patient to the Monte Bello main parking lot where Palo Alto Fire Department was staged. Fire personnel assessed the patient and released her at the scene.

  • On May 22, a solo injury motorcycle accident occurred on Page Mill Road. Maintenance staff came upon the accident and reported it to ranger staff. 9- 1-1 was already called and Palo Alto Fire Department was enroute. Rangers arrived and performed a patient assessment and traffic control until Palo Alto fire and police personnel arrived. The patient was transportedby paramedics to the hospital.

  • On May22, a ranger was first on scene to a solo vehicle accident on Highway 35 at Old La Honda Road. A vehicle rolled off the highway down a steep hill onto a dirt road below with a single occupant trapped in the vehicle. The ranger assessed and stayed with the patient until Woodside Fire Protection District arrived. Fire personnel extricated the patient and an ambulance transported them to the hospital.

  • On May 15, rangers investigated suspicious vehicles adjacent to Purisima Creek Redwoods Open Space Preserve and overheard possible firearms discharges occurring within the preserve. With assistance from the San Mateo County Sheriff’ s Office, the subjects were detained, and the firearms were determined to be CO2 pellet guns. A ranger cited and released the subjects.

  • On May 15, a ranger spoke to a hiking group about Midpen and its preserves at the Wallace Stegner Bench in Long Ridge Open Space Preserve. Rangers spent several days staffing a wildflower interpretation table at Russian Ridge Open Space Preserve as part of the annual “ Poppy Patrol” effort to prevent damage to wildflower blooms. Rangers also spent time at the Daniels Nature Center in Skyline Ridge Preserve doing interpretation (Living with Coyotes) and outreach/ visitor interaction.

  • On May 14, a ranger led a hike for a group organized by Director Kirsteen-Tucker at South Cowell in Purisima Creek Open Space Preserve. The ranger prepared and led the group through several stops to talk about Midpen, our Coastside mission, and the grazing program.

  • On May 13, a ranger responded to a medical emergency that occurred on the Mora Trail in Rancho San Antonio Open Space Preserve. The patient was assessed by Santa Clara County Fire Department and transported to the hospital by ground ambulance.

  • On May 11, an auto burglary occurred in the equestrian lot at Rancho San Antonio County Park. A suspect was witnessed breaking the passenger window on a vehicle before a visitor yelled at him, and he fled. A report was taken by a Santa Clara County Sheriff’ s Office deputy.

  • On May 10, a ranger responded to a call for medical aid for a visitor who suffered a possible heart attack/failure in Rancho San Antonio County Park. The ranger utilized the AED, but no shock was advised. Santa Clara County Fire Department arrived on scene and began CPR. The patient recovered a heartbeat and was transported to the hospital by ambulance.

  • On May 5, a mountain bike rider crashed on the Blue Blossom Trail in El Corte de Madera Creek Open Space Preserve. The rider suffered a suspected collar bone fracture and was transported out of the preserve by San Mateo County Fire Department personnel. Patient refused further treatment on scene and was provided a courtesy transport by a ranger to his vehicle at Skeggs Point.

  • On May 5, an injury hiking accident occurred on a Midpen docent led hike in Long Ridge Open Space Preserve. The injured party self-transported to a local emergency room and later notified Midpen of the injuries sustained.

  • On May 4, a trail use speed limit and e-bike prohibited violation occurred in Long Ridge Open Space Preserve. The ranger was unable to stop the subject. The ranger followed the subject into Upper Stevens Creek County Park on Charcoal Road, where the ranger lost sight of them. The subject was later stopped and identified off site on Redwood Gulch Road and was warned about the violations.

  • On May 1, a motorcycle accident occurred on Skyline Boulevard near Windy Hill Open Space Preserve. A ranger was first on scene and started patient care. When San Mateo County Fire Department personnel arrived, they took over the scene and patient care.

  • On May 1, a ranger responded to an injury hiking accident on the Jones Trail in St. Joseph’s Hill Open Space Preserve. A hiker fainted while hiking and suffered facial lacerations. Santa Clara County Fire Department responded and the patient was transported by ground ambulance.

April 2022

  • On April 25, a ranger responded to a medical aid for a visitor who fell and suffered an injury to his face on the Rogue Valley Trail in Rancho San Antonio Open Space Preserve. The ranger performed an initial medical assessment until Santa Clara County Fire Department arrived and took over patient care. The patient was transported to the hospital by ambulance.

  • On April 22, a ranger discovered a vehicle collision into a power pole with wires down on Highway 84. Rangers provided traffic control and requested California Highway Patrol ( CHP), San Mateo County Fire Department, and Pacific Gas & Electric ( PG&E) to respond for the incident. The driver was uninjured and CHP took over traffic control until PG&E repaired the power lines.

  • On April 17, a ranger set up an interpretive table and met with over 80 visitors and presented information about wildflowers titled “ Beyond the Bloom” at Russian Ridge Open Space Preserve. Rangers are stationed at various preserves as part of Midpen’s “ Poppy Patrol” wildflower protection efforts.

  • On April 15, a ranger responded to a hiker who fell and injured her right wrist on the Orchard Loop Trail in Picchetti Ranch Open Space Preserve. Rangers and Santa Clara County Fire Department evaluated and treated the patient. The patient was transported to the hospital.

  • On April 12, downed lines were located near the Paulin Cabin in the La Honda Creek Open Space Preserve. San Mateo County Fire Department deemed the lines non-hazardous and Pacific Gas & Electric ( PG&E) responded to de- energize them. The lines were brought down by a falling tree. PG&E advised they would return at a later time to remove the downed lines.

  • On April 10, a visitor reported two credit cards were stolen from their wallet which was in an unlocked car while they were on a hike at El Corte de Madera Creek Open Space Preserve. A ranger took a report and provided the visitor with information to file a report with the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office.

  • On April 9, a ranger responded to a solo motorcycle accident that occurred on Hicks Road just south of Mount Umunhum Road. The ranger provided initial medical care until San Jose Fire Department arrived and took over. The patient was transported to the hospital by ambulance. On April 10, a ranger observed a heavily damaged vehicle blocking a lane of traffic on Highway 35. The ranger assessed the driver, whose chief complaint was arm pain and requested San

  • Mateo County Fire Department’s response. The patient was assessed and released by Fire personnel.

  • On April 9, a ranger responded to a medical aid on the Stephen E. Abbors Trail in Rancho San Antonio Open Space Preserve. The patient suffered an injury to her arm from a fall on the trail. The ranger performed an initial medical assessment on the patient before transporting her to the parking lot where Santa Clara County Fire Department was staged. The patient was assessed by fire personnel and she signed an against medical advice waiver.

March 2022

  • On March 23, all rangers and other fire-trained Midpen staff participated in the annual firefighting refresher training at Rancho San Antonio Open Space Preserve. Staff were assigned to five teams that rotated through stations including mobile attack, progressive hose lay, fire shelter deployment, handline construction, and classroom instruction/ policy review.

  • On March 22, it was discovered that Midpen construction equipment, a mechanized toter and a vibraplate, stored behind the restroom at Windy Hill Open Space Preserve on Skyline Boulevard, was stolen overnight. Total approximate value of the equipment is $9,500. There are no witnesses and no suspects. Rangers filed a police report with San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office.

  • On March 22, rangers responded to a visitor report of a strong odor of smoke on the Sierra Morena Trail in the El Corte de Madera Creek Open Space Preserve. Rangers and San Mateo County Fire Department investigated and were unable to locate the source of the odor.

  • On March 20, a ranger responded to a medical aid that occurred in the Fremont Older Open Space Preserve. The patient’ s chief complaint was dizziness. The patient was evaluated by Santa Clara County Fire Paramedic and refused further care. The patient was given a ride out of the preserve to a friend’s car to seek further care on their own.

  • On March 19, a ranger was first on scene to a vehicle rollover accident on Highway 84, near the town of La Honda. The ranger performed a primary medical assessment of the vehicle occupants who later declined medical transport. The ranger transferred command of the incident to responding personnel from La Honda Fire District and California Highway Patrol, then performed traffic control until relieved.

  • On March 19, rangers contacted an individual walking in the middle of Highway 35 near Windy Hill Open Space Preserve. While contacting the individual, the subject made unintelligible and unclear statements and then grabbed onto the window and side of the patrol vehicle as the ranger tried to maneuver away. San Mateo County Sheriff’ s Office was informed of the subject and requested to respond for a welfare check on the individual. The subject was observed entering the preserve and leaving the preserve without further contact. Sheriff’ s deputies continued to monitor the subject outside the preserve.

  • On March 18, a ranger responded to a solo vehicle accident on Mount Umunhum Road in Sierra Azul Open Space Preserve. The driver stated that a vehicle was coming downhill in the center of both lanes causing him to swerve right and hit the embankment. There were no injuries and the vehicle was towed.

  • On March 17, a contractor’s vehicle was vandalized in the parking lot at Bear Creek Redwoods Open Space Preserve. The damage was consistent with an attempted auto burglary. A ranger took a report on March 28 when Midpen was notified. The victim was instructed to file a report with the Santa Clara County Sherriff’s Office.

  • On March 16, a ranger responded to a solo injury vehicle accident on Mount Umunhum Road the Sierra Azul Open Space Preserve. One patient was treated by medics and self- transported to the hospital. The vehicle was removed by tow truck. There was no damage to Midpen land or property.

  • On March 13, a ranger responded to a medical aid on the Ravensbury Trail in Rancho San Antonio Open Space Preserve. The ranger was first on- scene and made a medical assessment and provided oxygen to the patient. Santa Clara County Fire Department arrived on scene and continued medical care. The patient was transported to the hospital in an ambulance.

  • On March 13, a ranger observed a person slumped over the steering wheel of a vehicle parked at the Clouds Rest Vista Point adjacent to Coal Creek Open Space Preserve. The ranger attempted to contact the person by knocking loudly and yelling for over a minute with no response. The ranger requested San Mateo County Fire Department respond. Empty beer bottles were observed inside and outside the vehicle. The ranger was able to reach in through the partially open window and pinch the persons shoulder, to which the person awoke and responded that they were ok. Fire personnel evaluated the person and released them.

  • On March 12, a vehicle hit a power pole on Page Mill Road which knocked down power lines closing the road. A ranger performed traffic control and advised preserve visitors of the road closure and alternate directions to get home.

  • On March 10, a ranger observed that a hit and run incident occurred in the Mount Umunhum area in Sierra Azul Open Space Preserve. An unknown suspect crashed their vehicle into Sierra Azul gate 12 causing damage to the point of the gate being inoperable.

  • On March 8, rangers responded to an assault and battery incident that occurred in the Pulgas Ridge Open Space Preserve. The reporting victim and witness were interviewed. The other party involved in the altercation left the area and limited identification information was obtained. The investigating San Mateo County Sheriff Office’ s deputy found both parties were mutual combatants.

  • On March 8, a ranger responded to a report of an overdue hiker in Purisima Creek Open Space Preserve. Upon arriving at the Purisima Creek Road entrance, a ranger found that a Midpen lock was cut, the gate left open, and the vehicle associated to the overdue hiker was gone. The ranger searched the area and was unable to locate any visitors in the preserve.

  • On March 8, a visitor reported their vehicle was broken into at Saratoga Gap Open Space Preserve. Rangers and Santa Clara County Sheriff’ s Office deputies responded to the location where they collected information and evidence. The only items reported stolen were a pair of shorts and an eyeglasses case.

  • On March 6, a ranger observed a vehicle with a shattered rear window parked in front of Purisima Creek Open Space Preserve. The ranger advised the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office, photographed the scene, and left a note for the vehicle’ s owner.

February 2022

  • On February 25, a visitor injured their ankle while hiking in Skyline Ridge Open Space Preserve. Rangers responded, assessed the patient, and splinted her ankle before transporting her to the parking lot where San Mateo County Fire Department assessed and released her to be transported by family to the hospital.

  • On February 24, a ranger responded to a medical aid on the Serpentine Trail in the St. Joseph’s Hill Open Space Preserve. The patient fell from his bike and their chief complaint was hip pain. The ranger assessed the patient until Santa Clara County Fire Department arrived and took over care. The patient was transported by wheeled litter to the junction of Range and Serpentine Trails. A CAL FIRE helicopter then transported him to Alma Bridge Road where an ambulance waited to take him to the hospital.

  • On February 24, a ranger responded to a report from dispatch of an 87-year-old male who had fainted while hiking on the Alma Trail at Bear Creek Redwoods Open Space Preserve. Santa Clara County Fire Department also responded and located the patient. Fire personnel transported the patient to medics at Bear Creek Road where he was assessed, and the patient decided to self-transport home against medical advice.

  • On February 20 and 22, unlawful construction violations were found in Coal Creek Open Space Preserve. A previously closed illegal trail was re-opened and a tree house was built on Midpen lands. The violations were documented, a 72- hour notice to vacate was attached to the structure, and the structure will be removed.

  • On February 21, three people were threatened by a group with a gun in Purisima Creek Open Space Preserve. The victims described about ten males they were familiar with threatening them near gate PC05. The victims walked away from the group and came back to their car fifteen minutes later to find it vandalized including two slashed tires. The victims filed a report with San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office who are investigating the incident.

  • On February 19, rangers and San Mateo County Fire Department responded to a report of a fall injury on the Spring Ridge Trail in Windy Hill Open Space Preserve. A hiker found an elderly man lying on the trail and called 911. The patient was conscious but disoriented. CAL FIRE and Kings Mountain Fire Brigade responded and assessed the patient, who was transported tothe hospital.

  • On February 19, a ranger discovered a boarded-up window was broken open to one of the former Alma College buildings at the Bear Creek Redwoods Open Space Preserve. No suspects were seen. Engineering and Construction staff was notified, and the incident was documented.

  • On February 16, a closed area and a resisting a peace officer violation occurred at the former Beatty property in Sierra Azul Open Space Preserve. The suspect had admitted he was “ painting at the old buildings” on the County Park property. The suspect fled the detention before being identified and was not apprehended.

  • On February 12, rangers and Kings Mountain Fire Brigade responded to a report of a hiker needing medical help on Harkins Ridge Trail in Purisima Creek Open Space Preserve. Fire personnel assessed the patient who had been feeling dizzy for about 5 minutes. Fire personnel transported the person back to their car at the North Ridge parking lot and released them after they refused further treatment.

  • On February 11, rangers responded to a report of a visitor complaining of shortness of breath and weakness in Thornewood Open Space Preserve. San Mateo County Fire Department responded and assessed the patient, who refused further care or transport, against medical advice.

  • On February 7, a ranger responded to a medical aid near Deer Hollow Farm in Rancho San Antonio Open Space Preserve. The patient suffered from slight nausea and lower back pain while hiking. Santa Clara County Fire Department responded and assessed the patient who was transported to the hospital.

  • On February 6, a vehicle traveling eastbound on Highway 9 lost control and crashed into Saratoga Gap Open Space Preserve coming to rest around 170 feet from the roadway. The driver was deceased prior to arrival of emergency services. A ranger and San Mateo County Fire Department personnel extricated the body so the medical examiner could take custody. The vehicle was towed out of the preserve.

  • On February 6, a ranger responded to a report of an extinguished warming fire on a disc line within Fremont Older Open Space Preserve. The ranger located the fire ring and found another older fire ring nearby as well as a lawn chair. The fire rings were documented, and Santa Clara County Fire Department was notified.

  • On February 5, a ranger responded to a non-injury vehicle accident that occurred in the main restroom parking lot at Rancho San Antonio County Park. The vehicle jumped the curb and hit and broke a willow tree in front of a parking space along the creek. No other damage to park property occurred. The vehicle was towed from the park.

  • On February 2, two rangers presented to 50 pre-school students at San Jose Christian School. They discussed the duties of rangers and showed many of the tools and equipment carried by rangers in their trucks.

January 2022

  • On January 31, a ranger responded to an individual who was using tools to cut vegetation in an area off the Dusky Footed Woodrat Trail in Pulgas Ridge Open Space Preserve. San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office Deputies responded to assist. The individual was cited and released.

  • On January 30, rangers responded to an assault that occurred on the Manzanita Trail at St. Joseph’s Hill Open Space Preserve. The victim suffered minor injuries but was able to escape the assailant who was trying to drag her into the bushes. The suspect was armed with a knife. Rangers met with Los Gatos Police Department to share information and plan a follow- up response. The investigation is ongoing and Midpen is working closely with Los Gatos Police Department. Midpen increased ranger patrol of the preserve.

  • On January 30, a ranger discovered a possible illegal marijuana grow site inside Hicks Creek Ranch in Sierra Azul Open Space Preserve. Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office was notified.

  • On January 28, a ranger responded to a cardiac emergency that occurred in the permit parking lot at Rancho San Antonio Open Space Preserve. The patient was assessed by Santa Clara County Fire Department and transported by ambulance to the hospital.

  • On January 25, a ranger responded to an injury hiking fall accident that occurred on the Stephen E. Abbors Trail in Rancho San Antonio Open Space Preserve. One patient was located, assessed, and transported to the trailhead by a ranger. The patient signed an Against Medical Advice form with Santa Clara County Fire Department and was transported to their vehicle to seek further medical care.

  • On January 22, a ranger responded to an injury bicycle accident on Lower Meadow Trail in Rancho San Antonio Open Space Preserve. The patient was assessed by Santa Clara County Fire Department and transported to a nearby hospital.

  • On January 22, a ranger on vehicle patrol discovered power and phone lines down on Purisima Creek Road. The ranger called for San Mateo County Fire Department to respond and conducted traffic control until Fire personnel deemed the lines were not a fire hazard. The ranger provided traffic control for an hour, and with no estimated time of arrival from Pacific Gas & Electric, they left cones to direct traffic around the wires and cleared the scene.

  • On January 18, a ranger responded to a call for medical aid on the Hassler Trail in the Pulgas Ridge Open Space Preserve. A visitor was hiking, became dizzy, and fell forward suffering facial injuries. The patient was found and assessed by San Mateo County Fire Department. The patient refused treatment and was transported by family.

  • On January 17, a ranger responded to a medical aid on the Wildcat Loop Trail in the Rancho San Antonio Open Space Preserve. The patient fainted. The ranger located the patient who was conscious. The patient was assessed by Santa Clara County Fire Department declined further aid and was advised to seek further medical care.

  • On January 12, rangers responded to an off-site vehicle accident on Camden Avenue at the 85 south on ramp. When rangers noticed that one vehicle’s airbags were deployed, they set up traffic control. One ranger performed initial medical assessment on the occupants until San Jose Fire Department and police personnel arrived on scene and took over. Rangers cleared the scene.

  • On January 1, a ranger responded to a medical aid for a visitor who fell while hiking and sustained a shoulder injury in Pulgas Ridge Open Space Preserve. The ranger performed an initial medical assessment and basic treatment for the shoulder until Woodside Fire Protection District and CAL FIRE arrived. The patient was transported by ground ambulance to the hospital
